
Mayor to meet CM on slum problem
Newly-appointed Mayor Hareshwar Laxman Patil said that he will meet Chief Minister Narayan Rane shortly to discuss the issue of the burgeoning slums in the metropolis. Speaking at meet-the-press organised by the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, he said that he will discuss the issue of slums in Mumbai. He felt that the co-ordination among the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai police and other agencies must be increased to keep a check on the mushrooming slums.
One killed in firing
One person was killed in indiscriminate firing by three unidentified persons near Dreamland theatre at Grant Road late on Thursday night.
According to the police, the unidentified persons fired on Imran Hasan Rizvi 35, who is employed in a private company, and fled. Rizvi was rushed to the Nair hospital where he was declared dead before admission. One empty cartridge was found at the spot of the murder, the police added. The D B Nagar police are investigatingfurther.
SC dismisses Ailani8217;s appeal
The Supreme Court today dismissed the appeal of Kumar Ailani to stay the declaration of Hardas Makhija as mayor of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation UMC. Delivering the judgement today at 3.15 pm, Justice S P Bharucha said, 8220;We have perused the entire order. There is no case in merit or in law. Hence the case is dismissed.8221;
In the elections to UMC held on April 20, mayor Yashaswani Naik had rejected scrutinising officers8217; vote count, and has cast her vote as presiding officer in favour of Ailani, declaring the votes secured by Makhija invalid. Declaring that justice had prevailed, Makhija said: 8220;Ailani never stood a chance since there was no case at all.8221; None of the Sena-BJP-Independent combine leaders were available for contact, and were reportedly meeting to discsuu future strategy. While Wills Mathew appeared for Makhija, A Khanvilkar appeared for Ailani.
