
Dawood men get RI in JJ shootout
The designated TADA court today sentenced two associates of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim to 10 years8217; rigorous imprisonment RI for their involvement in the sensational J J Hospital shootout in 1993. The designated TADA Judge P K Chaware sent the gangsters 8212; Prasad Khadye and Pravin Gavand 8212; to jail and imposed a fine of Rs 1000 each or six months further imprisonment.
An AK-56 rifle, two magazines loaded with live cartridges, three hand-bombs and two boxes filled with live detonators were seized from the accused.
The convicts were arrested in June, 1993 and cases were registered against them under various sections of Indian Arms Act, Explosives Act and TADA P Act, 1987.
Dock workers8217; Protest Day8217;
Over one lakh port and dock workers at all the 11 major ports of the country will observe Protest Day8217; on Thursday. The protest day will be observed by organising processions and holding massive demonstrations in front of the headquarters of all theport authorities, said President of the All India Port S R Kulkarni today adding that the Government of India is on a fast move to privatise the Indian major ports by selling Indian ports to the vested interests in India and abroad.
BEST resumes Bhayander services
The BEST Undertaking resumed its bus services in the twin township of Mira-Bhayandar, in adjacent Thane district, this afternoon following intervention by Chief Minister Narayan Rane. BEST had suspended the bus services in Mira-Bhayandar after some of its buses suffered arson and damage in the wake of last Wednesday8217;s agitation by local residents against water shortage.
Stones hurled at local, 2 held
Railway Police arrested two youth for pelting stones at a Belapur-bound local today. Prakash Chavan 11 and Mohammed Nabi Abdul Rahim Sheikh 17 were caught hurling stones at the train between Mankhurd and Govandi by railway police constable Baban Bhairu Khina.
