The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court order quashing the abolition of nine districts and four commissariats, an official release said on Tuesday.

On May 21, the high court had quashed the notification issued by the Mulayam Singh Yadav government abolishing the districts and commissariats created by the previous Mayawati government.

The government had disbanded the districts in the interest of the state and its economy, the release added. The districts did not comply with the norms set down for the creation of new districts, it added.

The state government on January 13 abolished Patan, Basti, Mirzapur and Saharanpur divisions and disbanded nine districts—Jyotiba Phule Nagar, Shrawasti, Mahamaya Nagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Kaushambi, Auriya, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Chandauli and Ambedkar Nagar.
