
CAIRO, SEPT 6: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday escaped a bid on his life after security guards shot dead a knife wielding man who charged at him near here, witnesses said.
Security guards sprayed bullets at the knife wielding man who threatened Mubarak while the president was waving to the crowd from the window of his car in the neighbouring town of port said, witnesses said. He was reported safe.
The president was visiting Port Said to address a meeting. He continued with his engagement after the assassination attempt.
In 1995, militants opened fire on Mubarak’s car in Addis Ababa, when the president was on his way to attend the OAU summit. He was not hurt.
Mubarak’s predecessor Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by militants who were upset after Egypt signed the peace treaty with Israel.
