The Pentagon never knew where Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was during the US-led air strikes against Iraq last month, according to General Anthony Zinni, commander of the US Central Command in charge of forces in the Gulf.

Former US President George Bush wrote in his memoirs published late last year that the 1991 Operation Desert Storm had experienced similar problems. 8220;It was extremely difficult to target Saddam, who was known to move frequently and under tight security,8221; Bush wrote in A World Transformed, co-authored with his national security advisor Brent Snowcroft. 8220;We later learned Saddam had been caught in one military convoy attacked by coalition aircraft but escaped unharmed,8221; he wrote.
