NEW DELHI, OCT 21: The last time Simranjit Singh Mann walked into the Lok Sabha with his kirpan he had kicked up a furore. There was no such problem for him on Thursday when he walked up to take his oath, though he did carry a smaller one this time.
Mann was one among those members who had not sworn themselves in on the inaugural day of the thirteenth Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Ministers P R Kumaramangalam, Srinivasa Prasad and I D Swami also took their oath on Thursday, besides former prime minister Chandra Shekhar who came to the House with a bandaged leg.
Second-time Samajwadi Party member Phoolan Devi was all smiles when she walked up to take her oath. She had some problem reading through the written oath and was helped by the secretarial staff.
There are now just about a dozen more members who have to complete the formality.
On Friday, the House will take up the election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker. But this again remains a formality as the election of G M C Balayogi and P M Sayeed as Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be a unanimous affair. All sections of the House have agreed that they should get the positions.
President K R Narayanan will address the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Monday. The Union Cabinet met Thursday evening to approve the draft of the address.
