MUMBAI, August 14: Sanjay Modi emerged joint leader with Vivek Thoopal and Chaitanya Vaidya of Abhinav Vidyala by outwitting overnight leader Nitin Nawar of Mumbai Police. After the eighth and penultimate round of the Entrant’s Division Chess Tournament at the Zhandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen today, the top three have seven points each.

Bengle won 25-2, 25-23. Second seed Monaz Cooper tamed top-seed and former national champion Anupama Kedar 25-14, 25-18 to win the women’s title.Mahindras, Customs in final: Mahindras and MVHA Select II will clash in the finals of the Freedom 50 Independence Cup at St. Andrews, Bandra.

Mahindras ovecame Navy 4-2 in the semifinals. John Fernandes and Dhanraj Pillay scored a brace each for the winners. Customs IV (Sureh Perreira 2, Errol D’Silva 1, Stanley Fernandes 1) defeated MVHA Select II 4-2.
