
As a mark of protest against the state government for not providing state-of-the-art weaponry and bulletproof jackets to policemen, the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navanirman Sena MNS has launched a drive to collect funds from the people for doing the same.
The money will be later handed over to the state home department.
Launched by the Sewri-Byculla division of the MNS on Sunday, the three-day drive will see stalls being set up outside railway stations, MNS shakhas and markets to collect the token amount of Re 1 from the people.
8220;No modern weapons and bulletproof jackets have been provided to the police. The government is not paying attention to the matter,8221; said Chetan Pednekar, vice-president of the MNS student wing. At the end of the drive, the money and the names of the people who have doled out the funds will be submitted to the state home department, he said, adding that the protest would be launched at the Maharashtra level if necessary.
