Bihar Governor R S Gavai faced an awkward situation in the state Assembly on Friday when some Opposition and ruling party members drew his attention to the ongoing assault on people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in his home state Maharashtra and called for his intervention.
The incident occurred when the Governor was exchanging pleasantries with the members after his joint address in the state Assembly on the first day of the Budget Session. RJD MLA Shakuni Chowdhury told the Governor that he should intervene and check the hate campaign launched by Raj Thackeray against Hindi speaking people in Maharashtra. Some Treasury Bench members went a step further and demanded that the Maharashtra Government be dismissed and a case of treason instituted against Raj.
Earlier, the Budget Session began on a stormy note with Opposition members protesting against the Governor8217;s address. Members of the opposition RJD raised slogans of 8220;Governor go back8221; and demanded the resignation of the Nitish Kumar Government for failing on all fronts. A CPI-ML Liberation legislator read out a parallel speech and urged the members to reject the Governor8217;s speech as it was a 8220;bundle of lies8221;.
Some TV news channels later claimed that one of the slogans called Gavai a 8220;Marathi Governor8221;. But the RJD leaders strongly refuted having raised such slogans. 8220;It is baseless. No RJD or any other Opposition member has raised such a slogan. We were only protesting against the Governor8217;s address to the joint session,8221; RJD national general secretary Shyam Rajak said.
Responding to queries outside the Assembly, the Governor termed the incidents in Maharashtra unfortunate and said it should be stopped.
He praised the people and leaders of Bihar and said he was getting their love and affection. In his address to the joint session the
Governor lauded the efforts of the Nitish Kumar Government to accelerate growth in the state and counted 29 new schemes.
