Michael Jackson was knocked to the ground by screaming fans on Friday as he sparked the kind of pop hysteria rarely seen in Britain since the Beatles’ heyday in the sixties.

The U.S. Pop star’s admirers went wild at London’sPaddington railway station. Jackson, jostled and pushed in the melee, was lucky to escape injury.

‘‘It was just horrifying. He was knocked to the ground,’’ said Uri Geller. The Israeli had invited the singer on a fund-raising charity trip to the south-west English city of Exeter, where Geller is co-chairman of the local soccer club.

‘‘I honestly thought we wouldn’t make it and we would end up in hospital,’’ Geller said after battling to get aboard the ‘‘Jackson Express’’ train.

‘‘I have been around for 35 years. I have met Elvis Presley, Elton John, John Lennon, all the Beatles. I have never seen anything like this and I hope I will never see it again. Michael was crushed,’’ Geller said.

US magician David Blaine was equally astonished by the fervour of Jackson’s fans, who came to Britain from around the globe to catch a glimpse of their idol. (Reuters)
