JAMMU, August 8: Military attaches of 25 foreign missions in India today visited border areas of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir, a Defence spokesman has said.
Before visiting the border areas, the attaches from Delhi were briefed by Army authorities at Nagrota, 12 km from here, on the latest situation along the Line of Control (LoC).
The military attaches from countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Kenya, and East European, Middle-East, Far-East and neighbouring nations, were told about the ongoing proxy war launched from across the border.
The spokesman said the officers were convinced about the involvement of Pakistan and the covert support of its Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir, besides the matured response by the Indian Army.
While briefing the delegation, Lt Gen DS Chauhan, General Officer Commanding of Nagrota Corps said that there was no immediate threat of war between India and Pakistan despite occasional heightening oftension on the LoC which has resulted in heavy exchange of artillery fire in Valley Sector. He said it was because of Pakistan’s well known strategy of indulging in similar type of exercise before commencement of formal dialogue between the two governments or before any international summit like the SAARC meet at Colombo with the intention of internationalising the Kashmir issue.
Chauhan further told the delegation that the quantum of firing from across has also been escalated to facilitate infiltration of the maximum numbers of ultras before the onset of heavy rains which result in swelling of rivers and rivulets and hinder infiltration by militant groups. While replying to a question regarding increase in killing of civilians by militants, he said that it was most unfortunate that the militants were targeting the innocent civilians including women and children in remote areas devoid of presence of security forces.
He attributed such heinous crimes as disparate attempts by them in order to spread terrorand create a communal divide.
Earlier, the foreign Military Attaches were also apprised by Major General PPS Bindra, MGGS Northern Command about the ongoing proxy war waged by Pakistan, situation on the Line of Control, genesis of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir and various important milestones leading to establishment of democratically elected government in the State.
