With his tenth win of the season, the 44th of his career, Australian rider Michael Doohan clinched his fourth consecutive 60cc World Championship in the British Grand Prix at Donington Park. Doohan also broke the lap record set six years ago by Kevin Schwantz.

For most of the 30 lap race, Doohan was involved in a close battle with his team-mate Tadayuki Okada, who finished second.

Jean Michel Bayle, crashed his Castrol-backed Marlboro team Roberts Modenas KR V3 machine during the final qualifying session and was ruled out of the race due to injury.
