The ruling Congress in Assam today launched its formal campaign for the ensuing Assembly elections by organising a rally in which its leaders went all out to castigate the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the BJP for all problems facing the state.

Leading the campaign was Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He said it was the AGP which had introduced and patronised militancy in the state. ‘‘The AGP is a bunch of betrayers. They made tall promises and cheated people. They signed the Assam Accord, but later did not bother to implement it,’’ Gogoi said.

Election to the Assam Assembly is due in April.

Gogoi said the AGP is now a divided house. ‘‘People must remember that the AGP cannot keep its house in order. How can it expect the people to vote them to power,’’ he asked.

The CM climed that it was during the Congress rule the state had witnessed a ‘‘never-before all-round developments’’. ‘‘The economy is stable now. State government employees are getting salaries on time.’’

Addressing the rally, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said minorities were safest when the Congress was in power. Terming the Supreme Court’s order on the IMDT Act as ‘‘unfortunate’’, he said the Congress government had ensured that no minority community member was harassed.
