PUNE, March 31: The Maharashtra Cricket Association MCA today refunded a staggering 7-8 lakh of rupees to valid ticket holders kept out of the one-day international cricket tri-series cricket match between India and Sri Lanka at the Nehru Stadium on Tuesday. A police complaint has also been lodged by the MCA.

Joint honorary secretary Anand Mate told Express Newsline today that the extent of the scam was beyond imagination of the MCA which had never experienced anything of the like before.

Mate said: 8220;About 90 percent of the fake tickets were of the Rs 200 denomination with the rest being of Rs 100. The perpetrators used a fake hologram and stamp that passed of for the real thing, though on close perusal, the difference can well be seen.8221;

The counterfieters apparently got round MCA8217;s restrictions of placing a ceiling of four tickets per buyer, Mate added.

As many as 6,000 ticket holders were refused entry at the 35,000 capacity stadium and the ensuing pandemonium led to stone throwing by irate fans kept out.

Police resorted to a lathi charge to enforce control. The incident also left several fans and cops injured.

Three ticket touts were reported arrested yesterday, selling tickets priced Rs 100 for Rs 600 and Rs 700 for as much as Rs 1,200.

The 6,000 fans deprived by the the black-market activity were mainly from neighbouring areas of Osmanabad, Aurangabad and Solapur.
