
MUMBAI, JUNE 11: Mumbai Port Trust MbPT proved far too youthful and aggressive as Central Bank of India took a beating 8212; 1-4 8212; in the Punjab National Bank-sponsored Bombay Hockey Association8217;s Senior Division league match at the Mahindra Stadium here today.
But it took Mumbai Port Trust a while before they could find their rhythm. It the was the combination of Digvijay Naik, Mumtaz Ahmed, Javed Shaikh and Leonard Pereira worked their way through the Central Bank defence.
It was the first two names 8212; Naik and Ahmed 8212; who scored the goals, sharing the spoils equally.
The first goal was the result of the hard-work of the four players with Naik providing the finishing touch in the 28th minute.
They had to wait another 20 minutes before they could add to their tally of goals. Naik scoring the second goal too.
Central Bank fought hard and pulled one back through their veteran player Rommel Perreira.
If Central bank were entertaining any hopes of staging a comeback, then that was stopped in its tracks by Mumtaz Ahmed, who scored two goals in the space of eight minutes to complete the tally.
The match, played throughout aggressively by either sides, had its fair share of trouble with players receiving warnings and temporary suspensions.
MMbPT8217;s goalkeeper Jahangir Shaikh and Central Bank8217;s Vivek D8217;Souza, Srinivas Lapplikar and Martin Fernandes were shown the green card while Shayne D8217;Costa, Javed Shaikh , Sameer Jada and the bank team8217;s Vivek D8217;Souza were given temporary marching orders.
There will no matches at the venue tomorrow.
