NEW DELHI, January 7: If the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) acts on its promises , the city would be a brighter and cleaner place this year.

Listing out its targets, Delhi Mayor Shakuntala Arya said that to keep the city clean, the garbage removal capacity will be increased from 5,500 metric tonnes per day to 6,000 metric tonnes per day. The door-to-door garbage collection scheme will be extended to more localities and the number of tipper trucks will be increased from 39 to 100 this year.

There is also a proposal to develop five new sanitary landfill sites. The extraction of methane gas from three of them is also expected to start this year, Arya said.

The MCD also proposes to open 50 Sarvodaya Prathmik Vidyalayas having all the amenities. Admissions to these schools will be screened through tests and motivated teachers will be posted there. English will be introduced in some selected primary schools and vacant teaching posts will be filled on the basis of seniority.

To provide medical facilities to Delhiites, 10 ayurvedic, and four unani and homeopathic dispensaries each will be opened. Four maternity homes and 10 health centres will also be started. In addition, the MCD proposes that all primary school students studying in municipal schools will be medically examined under the School Health Scheme and free hearing aids and spectacles will be provided to needy children.

To make the city epidemic-free like last year, this year’s Action Plan also will be implemented to keep malaria, dengue and cholera at bay. The Revised National TB Control Programme will be implemented in all 10 chest clinics and a short course chemotherapy will be provided to poor patients.
