CHENNAI, MARCH 15: A massive search has been launched by the city police for two hard-core Al-Umma activists, Zakkir Hussain and Shajahan, who are believed to be behind the serial blasts in Coimbatore.
Sources said several police teams have been formed for the combing operations which are conducted mostly during nights. Police have received definite information that the two have got links in the city.
While the police have the photo of Zakkir Hussain, they are still seeking to find out the identity of Shajahan who managed to escape the police in Vepery. It may be recalled that Amanullah Khan was arrested by the Vepery police recently for moving around in a suspicious manner. But Shajahan escaped, leaving behind several hundreds of detonators.
The photo of Zakkir Hussain, which the police have, is outdated as he has now shaved his head. The photo with the police does not show him bald. Police believe the duo could be in possession of several kilos of explosives and may target Chennai.
The arrest andinterrogation of some Al-Umma activists in Coimbatore revealed that several kilos of explosives cannot be traced. It is hoped that the arrest of Shajahan and Zakkir Hussain will lead to the missing explosives. Initially, police received information that Zakkir Hussain was selling garments on a road platform following which a massive search was organised in that area. Police got the names of all sellers on platforms but were unable to identify Zakkir Hussain.
Hussain is said to have been trained by Imam Ali in handling explosives at Mettupalayam before his arrest. Police think the bomb seized near TVS bus stop was not meant to be exploded but merely meant to create panic.
