Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa today claimed that Congress MP Mani Shankar Aiyar had abused her in English, using ‘‘coarse, filthy and unprintable language’’ at a government function held in Nagapattinam on October 13.

‘‘I do not want to repeat the words he used because no self-respecting lady would ever use such demeaning language,’’ she said in a statement. Reacting to the furore over the attack on Aiyar after the function where she had criticised him, Jayalalithaa said Speaker Kalimuthu was witness to whatever happened on the dais that day.

In the statement, she noted that so far she had kept the issue to herself, but she was forced to come out in the open. ‘‘…I am only revealing this now because of the manner in which Mani Shankar Aiyar is trying to portray himself as a person who has been wronged,’’ she said. As for Aiyar’s allegations of assault by AIADMK men on him and his party office, she said it could well be an exercise to ‘‘gain political mileage out of a minor issue’’, adding Congressmen themselves could have damaged the MP’s office.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, in a memorandum submitted to Governor P.S. Ramamohan Rao today, demanded an explanation from the CM for her ‘‘behaviour’’ at the function at Nagappattinam and her response to the attack on Aiyar.
