
CHANDIGARH, Aug 19: The decomposed body of a 40-year-old man was found in a jute bag in a wooded area near Manimajra, with the marks on his neck indicating death by strangulation. The police have arrested five men accused of wrongfully confining the man, murdering him and trying to destroy evidence.
Those arrested are Budh Sen, Nathu, Kamal, Sham Lal and Ram Murthi, all residents of Manimajra and vegetable sellers by trade. The deceased has been identified as Manimajra resident Chander Pal, also a vegetable seller. He was reportedly murdered about three weeks ago.
According to police sources, on July 27 night Chander8217;s neighbour Budh Sen invited him for a drink at his house, where some other men were also present.
It was alleged that later in the evening when Chander8217;s 11-year-old nephew Sukhbir Singh who resides in Badaun district of Himachal Pradesh, and was visiting Chander, went to Budh Sen8217;s house, he saw a few men beating Chander and strangling him. One of them threatened Sukhbir and told him to tell no one.
Chander Pal disappeared after this and was believed to have committed suicide.
On returning to his native place, Sukhbir revealed the incident to his parents, who took him to the police and got the case registered.
The police arrested Sen, who took them to the place where they had hidden the body. The wooded area from where the body was found is on the border of Chandigarh and Haryana and is largely unpatrolled.
While the police said that investigations are on and the motive of murder is not known, sources said that illicit relations was the cause of murder.
