Maj Gen Gautam Ravindranath new dean of AFMC

Maj Gen Gautam Ravindranath, an expert in the field of paediatric surgery has been appointed as Dean and Deputy Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College.

Maj Gen Gautam Ravindranath, an expert in the field of paediatric surgery has been appointed as Dean and Deputy Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). He replaces Maj Gen G Rajagopal who retired on October 31 this year.

Ravindranath is a graduate of AFMC. He is the fourth alumnus of the college to be appointed Dean and Deputy Commandant. He was commissioned into the Indian Army in January 1975 and obtained MS (General Surgery) from Pune University in 1980. He did his postdoctoral M.Ch programme in Paediatric Surgery and he is also a recognised postgraduate teacher in the universities of Pune, Mumbai and Delhi.

Ravindranath had earlier worked as a senior adviser in Paediatric Surgery at Army Hospital, Delhi Cantt, Deputy Commandant of Artificial Limb Centre, Pune and Additional Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (HR) in the office of DG AFMS.

He is credited with introduction of several innovations in the field of prosthetics. He was awarded Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card for active war surgery during OP Pawan in Sri Lanka and Vishist Seva Medal for yeoman service with the Indian Expedition to Antarctica.
