CHANDIGARH, March 7: Maharashtra snatched an exciting one-wicket victory over North Zone in the cricket final of the sixth All-India Oriental Bank of Commerce Sports at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here today.

Batting first Maharashtra scored 181 for 9 in 35 overs with Augu Swami unbeaten 78, with seven fours. In reply North Zone missed the target by just one wicket as they made 180 for 9 in 35 overs. Surjit (56) and K K Gandhi (49) were their main scorers. Augu Swami claimed four wickets for 35 runs.

The winners received the Chairman’s running trophy and a cash prize of Rs 5000. North Zone were rich by Rs 2,500. K K Gandhi (North Zone) was adjudged the best all-rounder. Augu Swami (Maharashtra) and Kamlesh (Maharashtra) were declared the best batsman and the best bowler respectively. Cash prizes were also given to the first three position holders in table tennis, carrom and chess.

P K Sharma, General Manager of OBC, Punjab Zone, distributed the prizes. Among those present was Yog Raj Gupta, General Secretary of the AIOBEF. Meanwhile, T K Dutta, secretary, Oriental Bank Employees Sports and Cultural Club, disclosed that bank’s CMD Dalbir Singh had promoted veteran sportsperson Jagdish Parshad.

Brief scores: Maharashtra bt North Zone by one wicket. Maharashtra: 181 for 9 in 35 overs (Augu Swami 78 not out, K K Gandhi 2 for 26, Jaswinder 2 for 23). North Zone: 180 for 9 in 35 overs (Surjit 56, K K Gandhi 49, Augu Swami 4 for 35).

Shine Star Cup
Modi XI beat Fauji XI by 14 runs while Prudential XI scored a convincing 104 runs victory over United XI in the Shine Star Cup cricket tournament being played here.

Scores: Modi XI: 130 (Prem Singh 45; Anurag 3-25, Sanjay Dhull 2-12) beat Fauji XI: 116 (Anurag 38, Nagesh Gupta 27, Lakshay Sharma 24; Narinder 2-11).

Prudential XI: 183 (Ajay Duggal 45, Balwinder 42) beat United XI: 79 (Rajesh 20; Titu 2-17).
