THANE, Nov 8: At a marathon six-hour conference held here today, senior police officers voiced their concern about the rising incidence of dacoity in the state and resolve to accord top priority to tackling the menace.

Talking to mediapersons outside the District Collectorate, Maharashtra Director General of Police Arvind Inamdar said an action plan would be prepared on the several issues discussed and measures would be implemented.

Other issues included methods to increase the efficiency of the state police, he added.

Elaborating on the problem of dacoity, Inamdar observed that anti-social elements were virtually holding the people to ransom. “The police will adopt a professional approach to deal with the situation. Our first task is to boost the morale of the citizens,” he said, adding that patrolling by armed police personnel would reassure them. The relevant instructions had been given to the police officers, he said.

The issue of modernising the police force and operations was also discussed at the meeting. Several valuable suggestions were received and these would be considered, he said.

The meeting also dealt with Naxalite activities in the border area, he said, adding that he had visited the trouble spots ten days back and would make another trip within a week to initiate the planned measures.

In addition, today’s meeting took note of citizens’ views regarding the present situation in the state. More than 125 senior police officers from all over the state, including CPs and DIGs, attended the meeting.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)seems to have taken to naxalite activities in Thane district, if the incidences of attack on the police personnel at Kasa in Dahanu on Tuesday is any indication.

In an attack by about 500 BJP men at Sisne Dongar Pada in Kasa two police men were injured.

The Thane district rural police who made an unsuccessful attempt to hush up the matter finally arrested three BJP activists today and registered offences of rioting against thirty others.

It may be recalled that as a result of the political fall out in Dahanu over a clash between the CPM and the BJP, the BJP had intensified its activities and taken to violence. They even went to the extent of attacking the police party with stones and country-made revolvers. A senior official in the district expressed shock over the BJP taking to such activities in the district.
