CHANDIGARH, Jan 14: The room was filled with melody when Sujat Khan began with raaga Jan Samohini on his sitar, at the Punjab Lalit Kala Academy in Sector 16 today.
The performance was a part of the Thursday musical programmes organised by the Northern Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Punjab Arts Council, Chandigarh.
Sujat Khan, who is the disciple and son of famous Vilayat Khan, didn’t start as usual with aalap but with gayaki and went on with vilabheet ley, followed by a faster drut and then with jhala. In yaman kalyan, he impressed the audience with ek taal and teen taal. He finished with a noteworthy composition of a pahari laajo in thumri.
Sujat Khan has been giving performances abroad and has been nominated as visiting professor of Indian music at the University of Los Angeles.
The response to the programme was, however, lukewarm. The reason for this was cited as, “poor weather conditions and an inability to reach out to the music lovers” by Atamjit Singh, the co-ordinator of the programme on behalf of Northern Cultural Centre.
