The LTTE accused the Sri Lanka military on Saturday of violating the ceasefire by helping a rival rebel faction and said renewing peace talks to end a 20-year civil war would be futile unless it stopped. In the first statement from the LTTE since a government spokesman admitted elements of the military had helped the breakaway group, the LTTE said the Army was conducting a ‘‘secret proxy war’’. ‘‘The recent murders are indeed operations under this proxy war,’’ said the LTTE statement. ‘‘Using Karuna’s desertion as a cover, the proxy war against the LTTE has been intensified,’’ it said, referring to the rebel commander who broke away from the Tigers.
