
The Lok Sabha was paralysed on Thursday as members from both treasury and Opposition benches shouted slogans to mark the 15th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid. The House was adjourned twice before the Chair finally decided to call off the day’s proceedings.
As soon as the House met in the morning, Samajwadi Party, BSP, Left and RJD members got up from their seats to demand punishment for the people responsible for the demolition of the mosque. The Left members shouted from their seats even as SP and RJD members stormed into the well of the House.
The BJP-Shiv Sena combine retaliated by shouting “mandir wahin banayenge”. Soon, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee adjourned the House till noon. It was followed by another adjournment a little past noon and the last after 2 pm.
Shiv Sena leader Anant Geete alleged that a group of Shiv Sainiks, staging a demonstration at Jantar Mantar for the construction of a magnificent temple in Ayodhya, had been attacked. However, he was shouted down by SP and RJD members.
The House passed the Armed Forces Tribunal Bill with a voice vote without any discussion amidst din.
Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh introduced two Bills on land acquisition. One of the Bills, amending the 1894 Act, aims at ensuring a fair compensation and check the use of acquired land for a purpose other than what has been stated at the time of acquisition.
The second Bill is intended to push the National Rehabilitation Policy.
