Liverpool are hoping to rely on their history of comebacks to reach the second round of the Champions League. The five-time European champion need a win at Marseille on Tuesday to advance and avoid watching scoreboards for help.
The Reds started the group stage with a draw, then lost to Marseille at Anfield and at Besiktas. But since, Liverpool have rallied to win their last two and are hopeful to keep the momentum going in the final group game.
A draw will only be good enough for Liverpool if Besiktas beat FC Porto in the other Group A game. Entering Tuesday’s games, Porto lead he group with eight points, followed by Marseille and Liverpool with seven and Besiktas with four. Defending champions AC Milan already have advanced, along with former winners FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Celtic and Inter Milan and Arsenal, Sevilla, Chelsea and AS Roma.
Along with Liverpool, other European heavyweights also have yet to clinch their places. Nine-time winners Real Madrid need a win over Lazio on Tuesday to be sure of a place from Group C. Madrid and Olympiakos both have eight points, followed by Werder Bremen with six and Lazio with five. Bremen and Lazio could still qualify if they win their matches.
Rosenborg are in the best position to join Chelsea from Group B.
Schalke will reach the next stage with a win against Rosenborg—anything less would eliminate them from the competition altogether if Valencia beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Tuesday’s matches
Group A: Marseille vs Liverpool, Porto vs Besiktas
Group B: Chelsea vs Valencia, Schalke vs Rosenberg
Group C: Real Madrid vs Lazio, Olympiakos vs Werder Bremen
