Beyond Mush

8226; I Refer to C.Raja Mohan8217;s 8216;Not by Musharraf alone8217; IE, July 25, where he dwells on the policies that India should adopt towards Pakistan vis-a-vis terrorism. He says India should initiate a political transformation in Pakistan, to steer it towards democracy, and thus exiled leaders of the PPP Benazir Bhutto and Muslim League Nawaz Sharif should be propped up. I beg to differ. Even if these exiled leaders assume power in Pakistan, can we be sure they would be amicably disposed to us? Further, given the predilection of Pakistan8217;s intelligentsia to the generals of the army, there is no guarantee there will not be another coup.

The best idea would be to harness the global might of biggies like the USA, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, and the UN and ask them to tell Musharraf to rein in the terrorists against the threat of the severest of punitive economic sanctions. That would also be in the interest of big powers, given the spread of terrorism today.

Messaging terror

8226; Through its two-part newsbreak, 8216;Massaging Terror8217; in its July 24 and July 25 editions, Express has proved that the UPA government at Centre is not serious about combating terror. The blatant and shameless flirting by the Congress and it Communist allies with a known terrorist directly responsible for killing 58 persons and injury to many in the 1998 Coimbatore blasts is nothing short of shocking and scandalous. It also speaks of the political packaging and communalising of anti-terror policies by the UPA. What is the message we are sending out to the world of our resolve to combat terrorism, by such actions?

Worse than mole

8226; Suppose this. One is convinced that a terrorist is operating from the flat opposite his but fails to inform the police. Now, is not Jaswant Singh committing the crime of abetting a threat to security? He knew, as he says, a spy was operating from the PMO in Narasimha Rao8217;s tenure, when he was the Opposition leader. Later the BJP ruled for six years and he held important cabinet portfolios. Jaswant Singh did not speak of the spy or take any action against him. Now to promote the sale of his book, he is telling the story without naming the spy. When challenged by the PM, he says he will whisper the name in the PM8217;s ear. Afterwards he could as well say the PM was misquoting him.

Majestic quarters

8226; Housing History8217; in the Newsline IE, July 26 was sad reading. The disrepair the Eastern Court is left in shows our apathy to the august edifices built in the last century. The rooms are let out at just Rs 350 per day. Unless we learn to pay for the facilities that we use, such structures will not get the kind of upkeep they deserve. Most of the city8217;s old-time clubs are also having similar fates. Roshanara Club in 1947 used to charge occupants Rs 15 per month and today it is only Rs 125.

If inflation is considered, the monthly rent should not be less that Rs 2000. No wonder, the whole club presents a seedy picture.
