A Pseudonymous letter levelling corruption and sex abuse charges against senior police officers has raised a storm in the Bihar Police headquarters. While a senior IPS officer on Wednesday termed it a “sinister campaign” to defame some senior officials, another went on a long leave.
As the state Government is maintaining silence over the issue, Director General and Commissioner of Civil Defence Manoj Nath — whose name reportedly figures in the letter — has come out openly and questioned the present regime’s efforts to usher in good governance.
The letter reportedly contains the names of only those police officers who are known to be opposed to the coterie of state police chief DGP Ashish Ranjan Sinha, leading to speculation that it was an outcome of the ongoing coterie war in the headquarters.
The letter that is said to have reached the Home Department accuses a number of senior police officers of amassing illegal wealth and resorting to sex abuse. While airing contents of the letter, a private TV channel on December 1 reported that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had ordered a probe into allegations of disproportionate assets and sexual abuse levelled against several IPS officers.
Calling it “pseudonymous complaints stage-managed by some in the bureaucracy”, Nath wrote a strongly worded letter to Chief Secretary R J M Pillai seeking an “impartial” inquiry into how the complaints reached the channel and questioned the role of Principal Secretary (Home) Afzal Amanullah as well as DGP Sinha.
In his letter, Nath said: “This (the allegations) in itself was news to us because pseudonymous complaints are not inquired into and it was difficult to read the entire text of the scrolling complaint petition. But our names were prominently displayed.” Talking to The Indian Express, Nath said he had chosen to come out in public in order to defend himself as the state Government was maintaining a silence over the issue.
Meanwhile, Director General (Police Building) Anand Shankar met the Chief Secretary during the day and pressed for allowing his long leave applied for recently, a senior official said. Shankar too confirmed his meeting with Pillai.
