Your face is your fortune 8212; and history will tell you about 8220;a face that launched a thousand ships8221;. The face was mastercrafted by its creator with the best of intentions. The creator was the ultimate democrat 8212; he used the same components for faces around the world, irrespective of colour, religion or location. You may well ask why he chose to have some components in pairs and some of them single. Let me hazard a guess. He was just being cautious.

Let us begin the journey with the brain. Just see how one small brain has been grossly mismanaged. It has played havoc with people8217;s lives. If not kept in control, it converts itself into a devil8217;s workshop. Good or bad flow out of it with equal ease.

The face is provided with two eyes for good reason. They let us have a wider perspective of the world8212;an almost 360 degree coverage. This enables us to admire the colourful world of nature. The eyes have the ability to express emotions without having to say a single word. They can show love, sympathy, mischief, fear, anger and hatred. Sometimes a tear says it all.

We have one nose. I suppose smell is unidimensional and therefore did not require a partner. However, in spite of having just one nose, it can smell trouble and has also mastered the art of poking itself in others8217; affairs.

Why two ears? I think they are really useful. For one thing, we could hear from one ear and let it out from the other. This art can reduce tensions because it helps us to ignore what people might be saying about us. The wonderful partnership between the ears and the eyes can play an important role 8212; the famous advice, 8220;Keep you ears and eyes open.8221; This can be considered as an early warning mechanism8230;

I do not expect anyone would argue against one mouth. So many people across the world over so many centuries have created chaos, strife and pain by misusing their mouth. Unlike the harmony between the ears and the eyes, the partnership between the brain and mouth is rather an unhappy combination.

Again, assisted by the brain, the mouth can also be crafty. A Chinese proverb states, 8220;Once a word is spoken, a thousand horses cannot bring it back.8221; It will be unfair of me not to mention the submissive role of the mouth, that of accepting food. However, for the mouth to take interest in it, the creator has added a special element8212;the tongue8212;that can make us enjoy a huge diversity of tastes.

Before I move out of the mouth, let me dwell upon the lips. They were not just there to provide a cover to our teeth. There is a gracious and subtle understanding between the eyes and lips: The smile. Together, they can create a formidable impact. Many a time problems seem to get resolved by this unique combination.

Now to the last member of the face: The chin. Have you noticed how tough it is to hold one8217;s chin up? The unfavourable environment that surrounds us does not permit us to hold our chins up.

In the final analysis, I firmly believe that the Creator has done a fine job of the face. If we choose to mess around with its faculties, how can we blame the creator for it?
