After being banned by the US, the Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) has now been included in the United Nations list of groups belonging to or having association with the Al-Qaeda.
The LeT has been included in the list of 115 such groups that have linkages with Al-Qaeda. The inclusion automatically merits certain actions from member states such as freezing of assets, curbs on travel and residence, sale of arms to LeT etc. The organisation has been banned under the UN Resolution 1267 which makes these obligations mandatory on member countries.
The list has also brought out other names of LeT like Al-Mansoorian, a shadow outfit which has recently been active in Jammu and Kashmir.
Other aliases include Pasban-e-Ahle-Hadit, Pasban-e-Aahle-Hadis, Pasban-e-Kashmir, Army of the Pure, and Army of the Righteous. The move to place LeT on the list came days after the US placed the militant outfit in the list of banned organisations.
Washington welcomed the UN ban on Pakistan-based LeT and said, ‘‘We see this as an important step in our ongoing efforts to co-operate on combating the financing of terrorism.’’
