KANPUR, MARCH 31: Divided over the withdrawal of their strike, some lawyers here went on the rampage in the court premises on Friday and burnt the effigy of Union Law Minister Ram Jethmalani.

The Kanpur Bar Association, at its joint action committe, had decided to call off the 34-day-old strike on Wednesday but a group of lawyers rejected the decision and remained on strike.

Work in the district and sessions courts remained paralysed as the lawyers took out a procession and marched in the court compound raising slogans.

The striking advocates damaged the chambers of some of their colleagues who started work Friday. The agitated lawyers also damaged window panes and doors of courtrooms and burnt an effigy of the Union Minister.

Bar Association sources said the strike had been called off in response to an appeal from the Bar Council of India and a letter from the Union law Minister.

A police picket has been deployed in the court compound.
