BRIDGETOWN, March 30: Left-hander Nick Knight hit a superb 122 as England beat the West Indies by 16 runs in a high-scoring One-Day cricket international at Kensington Oval here yesterday.
The win came despite a century by West Indies captain Brian Lara.
Knight and Alec Stewart (74) shared an opening stand of 165 that lifted England to a formidable 293 for five off 50 overs.
Lara lashed three sixes and 15 fours in 110 off 106 balls. The home team eventually fell for 277 off 46.5 overs. Knight, 28, from Warwickshire, hit four sixes and 13 fours off 129 balls in just under three hours.
The opening pair had established a new first wicket record for England against the West Indies in limited overs internationals.
West Indies’ reply began with similar flourish to England’s. Clayton Lambert and Philo Wallace hit five boundaries in 25 before both fell within two runs of each other in the third and fourth overs.
Brian Lara and Carl Hooper shared a dazzling partnership of 88 off 82 balls but after thatthe middle order could not provide solid support.
