Less than a week after Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav received a complaint from the AICC against Vigilance Advisor Shiv Kumar, the officer has been asked to proceed on leave.

Sources said AICC general secretary Satyavrat Chaturvedi had written to Laloo on September 23.

It is perhaps the first time in the Railways that action has been taken against an officer of the rank of additional secretary. Shiv Kumar — the All-India Anti-Corruption Chief of the Railways — was asked to go on leave after large-scale freight overloading overloading to the tune of 2,990 tonne in excess of the rated capacity was detected during a surprise check at Muri junction in Ranchi. Around 696 tonne goods belonged to a company called Samrudha Overseas, which has been blacklisted by the Railways.

The ‘‘corruption and collusion’’ caused one of the biggest crackdowns in Railways — GM of South Western Railway G.L. Pant and Executive Director (Traffic Transportation) in Railway Board V.K. Roy were transferred; Chief Commercial Manager SWR K.B.N. Das and Chief Commercial Manager of WCR Radhacharan were sent on leave. Six others were also suspended.
