Prashant Verma8217;s new collection is inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey and his models will walk to JFK8217;s speech on space mission
After his collection 8220;Giant8221; brought together Hollywood and Mumbai in its billowy dresses and boxy jackets, designer Prashant Verma has gone for a futuristic look with robots, lunar surfaces and clean geometrical patterns. His new collection 8220;Point of Man8221; for the forthcoming India Fashion Week even owes an acknowledgment to Stanley Kubrick in its unmistakable overtones of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The 23-year-old designer, who surprises as much with his insouciance as with his playful use of colour and form, says, 8220;The focus is not too much on the market or the audience. I have come to a point where I feel I have to do something substantial in my work and for my satisfaction.8221; The nonchalance continues. Though Verma counts Dr David Bowman, the protagonist of Kubrick8217;s epic masterpiece, as his muse, he discounts any inspiration from international designers.
There is more surprise in store. The models will walk down the runway to excerpts of John F Kennedy8217;s speech on the space mission. On the ramp will be unisex trousers, a severe ivory dress with geometrical patterns, yards of chiffon with prints of marbled surfaces of Jupiter and a crushed, black asymmetrical shirt paired with billowy shoulder sleeves. Unlike, his earlier palette of hot and cold colours, Verma8217;s use of hues is controlled this time. 8220;I have used white along with cobalt blue and orange. The palette is muted,8221; he says.
