Despite a hard rap yesterday from the Supreme Court, Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna today showed no sign of backing off on not releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. ‘‘There hasn’t yet been any decision on releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu,’’ Law Minister D.B. Chandre Gowda said in Bangalore.

‘‘There won’t be any Cabinet meeting tomorrow,’’ he added. For the record, however, Congress MLAs and ministers held separate meetings backing the CM’s stand on the issue and conveying their sentiments to the party high command.

‘‘We are solidly with him (Krishna),’’ Ministers Qamarul Islam and Vasanth Salian said after their meeting at the residence of Urban Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

The state government also did not file any review petition today in the Supreme Court after legal advice that it won’t have any effect unless preceded by release of some water to Tamil Nadu.

Experts, however, were not asking the state to release water. But they reasoned that if such a petition were to be filed, it would be better to release some water to satisfy the court to some extent.

The government, however, decided against releasing water as such such a move could be counter-productive from all angles.

The Congress high command too is awaiting the Supreme Court order on the issue and AICC spokesperson Anand Sharma on Friday maintained that the court may have rained strictures on Karnataka on Thursday, but it was not the final order.

As for Krishna’s future, it heavily hinges on the court’s order on Monday. However, there is a belief in the party that if Krishna had committed contempt of court, it was to protect the interests of the people.

Krishna has been maintaining a stoic silence and is not even speaking to the media. He does not want to make a comment till the court hands down its order on Monday. He has not discussed the issue with anyone other than AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and his legal advisors.
