Gary Kirsten became the first player to score a century against all nine of the other Test-playing nations as South Africa dominated the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh on Friday. South Africa scored 369 for two after being put in to bat, with Kirsten 113 not out at stumps and Jacques Kallis on one in what is the inaugural Test between these two countries.

Graeme Smith and Kirsten had put on 272 runs for the second wicket with Smith securing his maiden Test century. He eventually fell to off-spinner Sanwar Hossain for 200 when he slogged a ball to Manjural Islam at mid-on. The only other success for Bangladesh came 30 minutes before lunch when Herschelle Gibbs drove at a delivery from medium pacer Tapas Baishya only to be caught in the covers by Tushar Imran for 41.
