While the entire Left top brass has taken off for the Ford Foundation-Oxfam-funded World Social Forum, CPI(M)’s Kerala unit is squabbling over ‘‘imperialist intervention’’ in party affairs.

As these leaders spurn globalisation in a forum organised with ‘‘capitalist’’ funds, senior politburo member V.S. Achuthanandan will be busy gathering evidence against members who worked with ousted CPI(M) leader M.P. Parameswaran to accept ‘‘imperialist funds’’.

What could well be a page from the Soviet era, Achuthanandan’s efforts to unearth ‘‘infiltration by imperialist agents’’ is being supported by politburo member E.K. Nayanar, E. Balanandan and a few others.

Though it is not clear what action Kerala state party secretary Pinarayi Vijayan will take against the accused, the Achuthanandan camp is trying to collect irrefutable evidence against ‘‘the infiltrators’’. Achuthanandan has written on the issue in the party organ.

Those he alleges cleared the flow of foreign funds in the name of ‘‘an unidentified source’’ include state party secretariat member Dr Thomas Issac, Dr M.P. Parameswaran and Dr B. Iqbal. Achuthanandan also claims that the link of these members with Mont Claire University anthropologist Richard Frankie (who he alleges has CIA connections) can easily be established.

Achuthanandan supporters are also crying for action against members like M.A. Baby, C.P. Narayanan and P. Rajeev, for giving space to ‘‘the infiltrators’’ in party publications. The issue will come up for discussion at the next Kerala CPI(M) secretariat meeting.
