A Karnataka special court, trying Jayalalithaa’s disproportionate assets case, has written to the Tamil Nadu sessions court to send moveable properties of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, seized in 1996, to Bangalore.

This includes 10,500 sarees, 91 wristwatches, 28 kg jewellery, 41 air conditioners and a high tech bus.

The special court was set up following the directions of the Supreme Court after fears were expressed on the chances of a fair trial in Tamil Nadu.

The court has sought delivery of the seized property by July 12. Nearly 100 pairs of footwear which were originally seized and subsequently returned to the AIADMK leader have been exempted from being produced here. The court has said that photographs of the footwear which were taken as evidence earlier can be produced instead. The trial in Karnataka has so far witnessed great fanfare with nearly 400 advocates signing memos to appear on behalf of Jayalalithaa. One of them even signed in blood on the memo. The court, however, rejected the memos.

The court on June 27 allowed the plea for clubbing of the cases. Jayalalithaa herself has been exempted from appearing before the court and is likely to be present only at the stage of recording of statements under section 313 of the CrPC.

The special court has, however, sought bail bonds from Jayalalithaa and Shashikala. The court has also asked Rajya Sabha member T T V Dinakaran, also an accused in the case, to personally appear on July 12 to furnish his bail bond.
