BANGALORE, August 8: The Karnataka government is to set in motion an ambitious scheme to preserve local breeds of cattle and improve the quality of milch animals by introducing cross-breeding with exotic breeds. It is feared that the famous Amrut Mahal, Hallikhar, Khillar and Deoni breeds, native to Karnataka, could either degenerate or become extinct if care is not taken to tend them. Nucleus herds of these breeds are to be created and four hi-tech frozen semen technology laboratories are to be set up in the State.
