MUMBAI, OCT 1: Ravi Shastri XI emerged emphatic seven-wicket winners in the inaugural match of The Indian Express under-19 Cricket Tournament on Friday. They trounced Kapil Dev XI, who invited trouble for themselves by opting to bat first on a damp Brabourne Stadium wicket.

The uncovered track had taken a beating by overnight rains, forcing umpires MS Pawar and CP Mahadevan to delay the start by three hours and slashing 15 overs per innings from the scheduled match 45 overs.

Kapil XI skipper Samrat Chitre defied conventional thinking by electing to bat on winning the toss. He was swiftly made to realise the folly of his decision. Kapil XI lost six wickets for just 17 runs as the medium-pace troika of Rohan Ganpule, Wilkin Mota and Pratamesh Athawale played havoc on the seamer-friendly wicket.

And as the wicket got progressively easier, Chirag Shah dug in to help Kapil XI salvage a relative semblance of respectibility. Shah 23 not out, 76m, 56b added 27 runs for the eighth wicket with Abhijit Penkarand 20 for the ninth wicket with Vishwaroop Sutre. Shah remained unbeaten on 23 8212; the only batsman to get into double figure in the innings, in which the ball failed to cross the boundary even once.

Shastri XI lost an early wicket, but opener Prasad Manjrekar 20 and Manish Raware 24 added 67 for the second wicket to help the side cruise through.

Prathamesh Athwale was declared man of the match. His effort coming before the Mumbai Cricket Association under-19 selectors 8212; Nitin Shirodkar chairman, Gopal Koli, Ajit Sawant, Suresh Shetty 8212; and coach Deepak Jadhav.

Athawale won Rs 5,000 as man of the match and pocketed an additional Rs 500 for for bowling three maiden overs. The tournament offers Rs 500 to any bowler delivering two or more maiden overs in an innings and capitalising on the prize were two more lads: Wilkin Mota Shastri XI and Padmanabh Kulkarni Kapil XI, who both bowled two maidens each.
