Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Jagmohan, who prides himself on his knowledge of India’s geography and culture, made a faux pas in Lok Sabha on Monday while reeling off statistics on how much his ministry is spending on developing tourist hubs, which had Tamil Nadu MPs on their feet but warmed many a ‘‘Mallu’’ heart.
Answering supplementaries on the decline in tourists over the past three years, Jagmohan gave details on tourist projects in various states of the country.
When P.H. Pandian (AIADMK) asked about the fate of tourist destinations such as Rameswaram and Kanyakumari in his home state, Jagmohan rose to say, ‘‘Kanyakumari, of course, is not in Tamil Nadu. It is in Kerala.’’
Following protests, he realised his mistake but nevertheless added, ‘‘Most people go to Kanyakumari from Kerala — I myself had gone from there.’’
He added, for good measure, that ‘‘Kanyakumari is on top of our agenda’’ and outlined various tourism projects such as the Vivekananda Yatra in this connection.
