Kamal and Patel score upset wins

Kamal Kishore Maderana, a trainee of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, kept his winning spree by upsetting eighth seed S K Mukund in the Asian Juniors ATF Tennis Circuit at the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium here on Tuesday.

The second round-match was extended to three sets before Maderana from Rajasthan emerged winner. Kamal Maderana lost the first set at 4-6. However, he bounced back into the game by winning the second set before huffing a puffing at 7-6 5 in tie-breaker. Kamal, who is a qualifier, gave a consistent display to end the challenge of Mukund who is ranked 113 in Asian Tennis Federation Order of Merit list, by 6-4. Wild card Atul Sri Patel also registered a mild upset as he stunned seventh seed and 123rd ranked in ATF AK Paradh Saradhi in straight sets 6-1, 7-5. Patel8217;s next rival will be top seed Vishal Passi who ended the challenge of Jatinder Singh in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

Local lad and third seed Digvijay Singh Naruka has so far justified his seeding as he defeated qualifier Ketan Tayal in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Another local player and fourth seed Nischay Rawal had no difficulty in advancing to the next round as outplayed lucky Loser Dhruv Goel 6-0, 6-1. Second seed and wild card Nguyen Hoang Thien, the only foreign entry left in the boys8217; singles8217; category, moved into quarter-final by ousting Manish Kumar in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

In the girls8217; singles8217; second round, qualifier Kavya Bharat shocked fourth seed and local player Bhavika Wadhawan 6-3, 6-4 on her way to quarter-final. Top seed Tarrannum Handa maintained her top form as she scored an effortless win over wild card Rajbir Kaur in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. Tarrannum is now pitted against fifth seed and wild card Rimpledeep Kaur who ousted Anushka Rajkumar 6-1, 6-1. Second seed Tamhita Nguyen of Philippines also had an easy round as she beat Roma Chandiran in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
