Two rounds are already over and the defending champions, Railways, still do not have any points to show. Things could have been worse but for an unbeaten century by JP Yadav on the final day against Tamil Nadu.
Things are still not out of control as Railways have five matches remaining and had proved last season that they can bounce back. Railways scored 267-5 in their second essay when the match was called off with seven mandatory overs remaining at the Karnail Singh stadium here today.
“Things have not gone as per our plan in the first two matches and I am confident that the players will bounce back in the remaining matches,” coach Vinod Sharma said.
Resuming at 25/2, the hosts lost skipper Sunjoy Bangar (7) with the team total on 34. Raja Ali (28) and JP tried to get the innings back on track with a 50-run partnership. But R Naresh had Ali caught behind.
Then came the most fruitful stand of the day, Yadav putting on 167 for the fifth wicket with Yere Goud (56) that saved the hosts the embarrassment of a home defeat. The two batsmen showed the application that was lacking in the first innings as well as in the previous game against Karnataka.
“It was tough to control my strokes but then sometimes you have to play according to the demands of the team. It was a satisfying effort and hope we can do well in the next game against Gujarat,” Yadav said.
Though Yadav put his head down in the first session, the aggressive all-rounder displayed a wide array of shots in the remaining two sessions. He lofted Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan for two sixes and then played a couple of drives off the other bowlers. His knock came off 242 balls and included 16 fours as well.
Brief scores: Railways: 270 and 267-5 (JP Yadav 130 not out, Yere Goud 56) drew with Tamil Nadu 371.
