The local unit of the Janata Dal observed the day as Sangharsh divas. The Dal gave a call to the workers of the City tonight under the banner of secular forces so that a 8220;strong movement could be built to defeat the forces of oppression.8221;
Employees from different departments of the UT Administration, Punjab Government, insurance industry, banking, telecommunications, the PGI and the Punjab University Non-teaching Employees were among those who participated in the function jointly organised by Trade Union Council Chandigarh and UT Building Maintenance Workers Union in Sector 16.
General secretary of the Trade Union Council, Rakesh Chopra, said that the gathering flayed the present government for its anti-workers policies like retrenchments, closure and merger of departments and privatisation of vital public departments. A large number of industrial workers took part in the rally held by All India Centre of Trade Unions AICTU. The speakers, through a resolution, demanded that industrial establishments in the City should observe a holiday on May Day every year.
CTU employees held a rally in front of the office of the Director, Transport, CTU to observe the day. A large number of members belonging to all the seven associations of employees held a massive rally under the banner of Panjab University Non-teaching Employees Federation. Speakers criticised the administration for adopting delaying tactics regarding the demands of non-teaching staff. Reports of May Day functions have also come from Safai Karamchari Sangharsh Samiti, Majdoor Sudhar Sabha, and some other organisations.
