April 13: A brace by promising schoolboy Jayesh Jadhav helped Bombay Republicans C8217; lift the third division title in the Bombay Hockey Association BHA league, sponsored by Punjab National Bank. In the final held at BHA today, Republicans, fielding a side of teenagers, drubbed BARC 2-0.
Earlier, Ordnance Factory, Ambernath, rallied to beat Dolours United by the odd goal in three to lift the fourth division title. The winners will receive their trophies at a common ceremony, to be held at the conclusion of the BHA league.
Bombay Republicans had the home advantage. Thanks to BHA, the boys from a homeless club have been allowed to practise on the frayed turf round the year. Jayesh Jadhav has an additional advantage. The 15-year-old has the BHA stadium for his backyard, as his ancestors were curators at the ground.
To make a long story short, Republicans were off to a dazzling start, Jayesh Jadhav slotting home centre half Mahesh Lokhande8217;s through pass in the first minute. BARC sorely lackedco-ordination, one of Republicans8217; strengths. They also did not seem to have the energy to match Republicans8217; youthful zest. But they held on till the 37th minute, when Republicans consolidated their lead. A cross from right-in Rohit Charles was blocked by a BARC defender, but Jayesh was quick to pounce on the rebound. An opportunistic reverse flick, which Jayesh is good at, according to coach M Patel, did the damage.
8220;But for missed opportunities, Jayesh could have completed a hat-trick,8221; the proud coach said.
Dolours took an early lead in the fourth division final, Peter Rodrigues scoring in the sixth minute. But H Mohan got Ordnance the equaliser, while D Thoney put them ahead in the 23rd. The equaliser eluded Dolours all through the second half.
