
CHENNAI, DECEMBER 12: The Japanese Government has decided to extend financial grant of US $ 82,716 to the Entomology Research Institute (ERI), Society of Loyola College, and of $ 81,385 to The Banyan, a rehabilitation centre for mentally handicapped destitute women.
According to the Consulate General of Japan, the signing ceremony for the grant contracts will be held on December 14. The assistance comes under the Japan’s grant for grassroots projects. In the fiscal year 1998, total amount extended under the scheme was about $ 49 million for all the countries, and $ 6.73 lakh for south India.
The ERI is a centre for inter-disciplinary research in various areas of Biology with emphasis on agriculture. The institute which researched insect taxonomy in its initial years from 1964 has diversified into molecular biology, bio-technology and tissue culture.
