MUMBAI, JUNE 23: The State Government today ordered a judicial inquiry into Thursday8217;s police firing on an angry mob at Jalgaon protesting slum demolitions. The firing left two persons dead and several injured.

quot;The government has decided to conduct a judicial inquiry by a sitting or retired high court judge,quot; Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced at a press conference. The commission will investigate alleged police excesses and find out if the firing was necessary, he added.

Bhujbal also directed Nashik Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Ubale to find out if the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation8217;s action to demolish the slums was necessary as the State housing department had issued specific orders staying the demolitions. The orders, staying demolition of all residential structures during the three months of monsoon from June 7, had been issued following the incident at Malwani in North Mumbai earlier this month.

As per initial reports, the police resorted to firing in self-defence as the unruly mob attacked the police team. According to the official information, 26 persons including three police personnel were injured in the stone pelting by slumdwellers.

Bhujbal also announced financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 10,000 each for the injured.
