Israeli helicopters fired missiles into Gaza City just hours after two Palestinian suicide bombers killed 22 people and injured more than 100 in back-to-back attacks in central Tel Aviv.
Witnesses in the Gaza Strip’s main city said at least 14 missiles streaked into targets which included two metal foundries. Electricity suddenly went out, plunging the city into darkness. Five people were injured.
Israeli PM Ariel Sharon convened his Security Cabinet to consider military responses to the bombings, the first such attacks in Israel for six weeks.
Palestinians said the helicopters appeared to target the middle of Gaza City, the largest in Palestinian-ruled areas of the coastal strip where over one million Palestinians live.
Arafat’s Palestinian Authority denounced it as a ‘‘terrorist’’ attack. It also said Israel had demolished 3,000 Palestinian homes in the past 27 months, a punitive policy that Palestinians say only provokes them into more violence.
The Israeli Army had no comment on those figures. US President George W. Bush denounced the attack.‘‘He condemns this in the strongest possible terms,’’ spokeswoman Claire Buchan said. France and Britain also issued strong denunciations. (Reuters)
