PUNE, SEPT 20: Corporators cutting across parties lines today took strong objection to the civic administration’s proposal to hand over part of Wagholi water supply scheme to Jaihind Projects Ltd, which had been indicted by the Agarwal Committee, for maintenance.
Raising the issue at the general body meeting, BJP corporator Suhas Kulkarni alleged that the municipal officers were involved in corruption since they were handing over the entire project to the company, which had been blacklisted. He alleged that officers were taking decisions without taking into confidence the corporators.
Ujwal Keskar, another BJP corporator sought to know whether the administration had received a copy of the report. Keskar insisted that Municipal Commissioner should take action against the official, who had proposed to hand over the project to the indicted company.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Madhav Sangle’s assurance that he would take the decision after going through the documents could not pacify the corporators. Hiraman Shinde of the Congress and Ankush Kakade of the NCP at this stage also demanded action against the officer, who made the proposal.
BJP’s Vikas Mathkari asked how the officials could think of handing over the scheme to the company which was responsible for three deaths. Mathkari said the Agarwal Committee report had even expressed fear that another water tank at Nigdi, which was constructed by the same company was also likely to collapse. After forceful demand from the corporators, Mayor Datta GAikwad asked water supply department to make detailed statement in the house on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the State Government has not taken any action on Agarwal Committee report during the past five months. Guardian minister Pramod Navalkar had asked Divisional Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal to submit the report within a month after the mishap at Nidgi, killing three and injuring 15 persons.
The report also had recommended action against superintendent engineer, executive engineer, assistant engineer and junior engineer of Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), who were supposed to ensure that work was being completed as per the laid down norms. However, no action had been taken against MJP officials so far.
