AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa has said her party would approach the Madras High Court seeking more protection as she was facing a threat to her life. The police had arrested a 30-year-old from the former Chief Minister’s residence Veda Nilayam on Tuesday.

“It is god’s grace that I escaped. But for the alert given by my sister Sasikala and her relative Ilavarasi, the intruder might have entered my room,” Jayalalithaa said. Claiming that there was a threat to her life, she said she would lodge a complaint with the President, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister. Jayalalithaa alleged that she had information that M K Stalin, Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister and son of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, has told his father that “she would not be alive” during the next Assembly polls. “Karunanidhi had asked Stalin to nurture the present alliance to face the next Assembly polls during which he might not be alive, to which Stalin had reportedly said that I might also not be alive,” she said. “I have decided to reveal this information due to Tuesday’s incident. It is for you to infer,” she said.

The state Government has provided her only three constables for security despite being in the ‘Z plus’ category, the former CM said, reminding that TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu was being protected by 65 police personnel in his house. “I am given NSG security only when out of my house,” she added.

On Tuesday, security guards at Jayalalithaa’s house had handed over Dandapani, a native of Erode, to the police after he was caught trespassing. According to the guards, the man was spotted by Jayalalithaa and Sasikala, when he had strayed on to the first floor of their residence. On questioning, Dandapani said he had wanted to meet the former CM to get a job as a security guard.

The issue also flared up in the Assembly on Wednesday, the first day of the Monsoon Session, after AIADMK members who rushed into the well of the House accusing the Government of not providing sufficient protection to their party chief were evicted.

AIADMK whip K A Sengottaiyan said a person had incident had raised concerns about the leader’s security among the cadre and the people. The Government has failed to provide her sufficient security, he alleged. Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy countered saying initial enquiries had revealed that the man was an AIADMK sympathiser and just wanted to seek employment.

But, the AIADMK members, who were not satisfied with the reply, rushed close to the Speaker’s podium and sat in front of him before being evicted by the sergeants.

Later, Jayalalithaa said Veerasamy’s comment was an attempt to divert people’s attention and “lessen the seriousness of the incident”. She also wanted to know how the intruder was “allowed to enter the house by the police”. Had he come looking for a job, he would not have entered the house wearing his shoes, she added.
